For maintaining my temporary projects, I have been using a Windows XP professional and WAMP. However, he looks tired and no longer respond the request, so I decided to install a Linux instead.
I'm copying all the necessary files to my laptop. Then I'll put the burned CD image in the "server" and ready to go. It's been more than 5 years since I tried to install any kind of Unix (except Mac OS) so I'm so excited! I hope things are so much easier since then...
encountered the first problem, it didn't go farther than the splash screen, but it solved by F6, changing option and deleting "quiet splash"
Mainichi-shinbun, one of the national newspaper in Japan, said its reporter secretly recorded a conversation with a representative, and the content was posted on a blog by a third person.
Brief translation of the Japanese news site.
http://www.mainichi-msn.co.jp/today/news/20070224k0000m040096000c.html
Makoto Odaira, 41, a social division reporter at Mainichi Shinbun, interviewed Rep. Itokawa of the house of representatives about his being threatened. Odaira recorded this conversation without Itokawa's approval and gave the recorded device to another story contributer a month after the interview. The contributer then gave the recorder to another media-related person and the person posted the minute on a blog.
I feel ashamed. How great not having a J-school in Japan!! :p
BTW, in Japan, there're several national (i mean, nationwide) newspapers. Asahi, Mainichi, Nikkei, Sankei, Yomiuri, and so on.
It's my personal guess how they correspond to American ones:
NYT=Asahi
WSJ=Nikkei
WP=Sankei
else: don't know....
Skipping two days of classes, I came to Missouri School of Journalism with my photo professor.
It was an eye-opening opportunity, looking the best photographies around the States and still choosing a few of "the best of the best".
I was so surprised (and disappointed by) the new category, photo column. All that won were ones that published in paper. They also allowed in blogs or some kind of Web form but most of them were very poorly done. Again, that's national competition. I'm not saying they were bad. There are way more possibilities that we can utilize the new world.
One more thing that I noticed.
All photos that remained in final of POYi, except a few, were horizontal. Even the few of vertical one looked like cropped from vertical ones. I have to keep in mind.
Also, I met my first Japanese photo journalism student here. Feelin' good to see someone from the same background, you know.
But YouTube still encoding the files, so please wait for .... maybe a day.
I'm kinda afraid that the movie stuff is too much work. I spend whole weekend shooting, editing the stuff. Other staffs helped me. The reporter supplied information, the (still) photographer got the names of person on the movie, and Designer and Web editor worked together to record voice over, made the "Intro" movie and post production thingy.
We were working on it til 3:30 am!
That's something we have to consider before we all burn out.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure that we made much much better ones than last week's one.
So hurry the YouTube!!
OK, looks like (or obviously) it's done. But we couldn't figure out why the quality is so different. Second one is pretty good while the first one is terrible, given that we encoded to the same quality of mp4 files.
I keep amazed by how DN people adopt our new technology tryout.
We already uploaded first podcast(well, technically not but virtually the first) and video.
Feature section started planning the use of podcast, video and blogs. They'll ask if we can bring a camcorder to the sources. It's as same process as they ask for still pictures.
We bought a DV camcorder and some voice recorders.
One of our unused office room is becoming a studio as I brought some mics and a mixer.
HDR-HC7, sony's latest consumer model HDV camcorder, can come to affordable range for me if I work hard at DN, which is happening.
well. I'm still excited. Just be careful not to burn out though...
I don't have my camera.
I bought a used 1D last year. But it soon broke, and I haven't been able to afford $900 to fix it.
Anyway, I went back to the place that we shot movie last night and shot the guy's portrait.
On the way, one of my friends called me so I went back.
Then, I reached to the place and found out I didn't put the memorycards.
Finally, I went back again and shot his pic.
What is worse, the pics I took today didn't run; last night's one did instead.
I tried to get some decent image from DV tape, but it was way too small.
No conclusion or any funny part today. Just for the sake of keepin' writing.

Go Look It!
I think it's ok for the very first work.... How do you think?
Good link was posted on the comment below. The page explains how to grab a picture from HD movie.
Amazing. Just capture it. No special treatment is needed. It can run even 6-columns!
Today, I went out and found some people from the city's water system were digging a hole on the road.
So I shot some pictures. Guess what. All of them were out of focus, blurry, just pieces of crap.
Yup, since I wasn't allowed to come in the hole, I just hold the strap of the camera and push the button or set the timer, expecting something would be in the frame.
One another case to prove camcorders' supremacy. We can hold it down with LED panel up. There're even a handle and rec/zoom buttons above.
Hummmm.
I was thinking about breaking into a bank and (just kidding, you know) get a Sony HVR-A1U but a colleague told me that it's not a 3-CCD cam and doing terrible in a dark light. Then, may be FX7?
I definitely buy a camera/camcorder by March. I have to shoot a wedding of my friend.
I was thinking what kind of investment DN could do.
1. Buying a camcorder
All consumer models has NO MIC INPUT!!
I wasn't expecting the situation to be that bad. Then, there's virtually no difference between buying a movie-capable point and shoot digital still camera and buying a cheep camcorder.
2. That's all.
Then, coming back to my topic. Who knows about taking still pictures with prosumer HD camcorders? I searched through the Internet but no one was talking about how to photoshop the pic considering HD picture quality, how to set up a camcorder and so on...
Yeah, it's pretty new field so that's something I should figure out by myself.
I need money!!
I found these pages through digg.
A portrait of a couple with a wounded soldier was the first place portrait at World Press Photo.
thetrukstop.com says:
It was my first time to find the person who has similar feeling about war and soldiers."It was one of the most powerful and emotional images I had ever seen. Even though I was born and raised in Australia, I moved to the USA and married into a military family. My brothers-in-law all served, as did my father-in-law. Back home, my father was SAS in the 1960's. I have a deep respect for those who join the military to stand up for our freedom, no matter how the politicians coin the cause or what their true motivations are."
I first have to state that I don't have particular feeling of whether the recent wars are good or not, because I haven't found sufficient evidence to conclude to ether side. We're killing more innocent people than Terrorists did in U.S.. Yeah right, but how will it affect the world 100 years later? I'm not a god. I still have to make a decision, you may say. I know, but I don't have a voting right here, guys.
Some people don't understand and treat anti-war campaign as anti-soldiers campaign. That's stupid.
Anyway.
War is one of good topics creating good images. My favorite picture is one that won 2006 Pulitzer prize. It just blew my head. I haven't found a stronger picture than this. Tell me if you do. People have different tastes.
