Good link was posted on the comment below. The page explains how to grab a picture from HD movie.
Amazing. Just capture it. No special treatment is needed. It can run even 6-columns!
Today, I went out and found some people from the city's water system were digging a hole on the road.
So I shot some pictures. Guess what. All of them were out of focus, blurry, just pieces of crap.
Yup, since I wasn't allowed to come in the hole, I just hold the strap of the camera and push the button or set the timer, expecting something would be in the frame.
One another case to prove camcorders' supremacy. We can hold it down with LED panel up. There're even a handle and rec/zoom buttons above.
Hummmm.
I was thinking about breaking into a bank and (just kidding, you know) get a Sony HVR-A1U but a colleague told me that it's not a 3-CCD cam and doing terrible in a dark light. Then, may be FX7?
I definitely buy a camera/camcorder by March. I have to shoot a wedding of my friend.
I was thinking what kind of investment DN could do.
1. Buying a camcorder
All consumer models has NO MIC INPUT!!
I wasn't expecting the situation to be that bad. Then, there's virtually no difference between buying a movie-capable point and shoot digital still camera and buying a cheep camcorder.
2. That's all.
Then, coming back to my topic. Who knows about taking still pictures with prosumer HD camcorders? I searched through the Internet but no one was talking about how to photoshop the pic considering HD picture quality, how to set up a camcorder and so on...
Yeah, it's pretty new field so that's something I should figure out by myself.
I need money!!
I found these pages through digg.
A portrait of a couple with a wounded soldier was the first place portrait at World Press Photo.
thetrukstop.com says:
It was my first time to find the person who has similar feeling about war and soldiers."It was one of the most powerful and emotional images I had ever seen. Even though I was born and raised in Australia, I moved to the USA and married into a military family. My brothers-in-law all served, as did my father-in-law. Back home, my father was SAS in the 1960's. I have a deep respect for those who join the military to stand up for our freedom, no matter how the politicians coin the cause or what their true motivations are."
I first have to state that I don't have particular feeling of whether the recent wars are good or not, because I haven't found sufficient evidence to conclude to ether side. We're killing more innocent people than Terrorists did in U.S.. Yeah right, but how will it affect the world 100 years later? I'm not a god. I still have to make a decision, you may say. I know, but I don't have a voting right here, guys.
Some people don't understand and treat anti-war campaign as anti-soldiers campaign. That's stupid.
Anyway.
War is one of good topics creating good images. My favorite picture is one that won 2006 Pulitzer prize. It just blew my head. I haven't found a stronger picture than this. Tell me if you do. People have different tastes.
I just wanna output everything I have before my energy to keep this blog runs out.
So, as on the title, Camcorder may be good for natural portraits.
I recently shot the engagement pictures of a couple. I took Canon Rebel(the oldest one) and 10D, and we went to a park in a cold day (about 10F, guys. frrrrrreeezing!).
Suddenly, 10D froze, and its shutter sticked and kept recording just black images.
It happened several times, and I couldn't get any good ones of them kissing. That's bad.
What if I used a camcorder to record it?
One good thing is I actually see what I'm shooting. SLR folds the mirror when it captures the image, so we can't see the very moment.
So many moments that I missed would have been saved and printed well on (at least) 4x6 pictures. And even a video to make extra worth to my work!!
Need some pictures to print big? That's why we still need a SLR. Most of the time, the picture people want to be printed big is kind of "set-up" shots, which we can easily take with any SLR.
So...
This degicade entry taught me how Dallas Morning News photographers do their assignments.
You know, there is a time for any photographer when s/he followed the senior staff and learned how to work with each assignment. We can virtually do that with three movies at the website.
Then, this site tells us how to make a good interview take.
Basically, you're not allowed to say anything during their speaking. No one wanna listen to your saying "aha."
Finally, Abilene Christian University in Texas puts good examples of what you should expect.
Personally I don't like that they don't come with any Voice Overs, but it's good enough.
They seem like using Canon GL-2 or 1 because they often forget to turn off IS feature when panning.
Anyway.
One problem before bringing a camcorder to field: permission.
Especially sports games. They often issue different kind of media pass from still to video.
That's one thing I'm worrying about, but it'll be overwhelmed by the wave of camcorders.
Related or not, some states are ruling NFL to allow any local TV to the sidelines. Things are changing so fast.

MultimediaShooter quoted Evan Vucci's word at SportShooter.com.
He said that his pictures from a HD camcorder and the video piece were used in major news such as Yahoo.
Well, that may be time for me to think about: Get a camcorder instead of still one.
You know, I can get a decent HD camcorder for about the same price of Canon EOS 40D (not yet... but I'm expecting it to come out sooner)
HD has 2-mega pixel resolution. Which can fit up to 10 inches of newspaper photo (it's just my guess. no technical background to support)
Hummmm.
Roanoke.com uploads their videos.
All of them are short, less than a minute, but I think we can start from this level so that we won't overwhelmed by a lot of work and quit.
I liked the desperate housewife one, but can we use a part of TV? Does 8-second rule really exist? They even used 11 seconds!
We'll see.
Yup, the DN Web Boot Camp is over. The most thing I learned is that the DN core staffs were really serious about the new wave of web-journalism. That's cool.
What else I learned is what else we can do to bring DN to the cutting edge of Web 2.0.
We can hook the phone cable up to the PC and record any interview (of course after their permissions)
All reporter can bring point-to-shoot or voice recorder and get the good stuff.
DN Multimedia team(who's that??) can make it to a movie or sound-slideshow or even potcast and put to our website.
Well, I just made mambo set up on my home server.
enjoy.
And, also drupal.

Just a test.
